How to Schedule YouTube Shorts (Step by Step)

Written by the Sharevia team··3 min read

YouTube Shorts is the quiet overachiever of short-form video. It doesn't get the cultural attention of TikTok, but Shorts can keep being discovered for months, partly because YouTube is also the world's second-largest search engine. A Short with a good title can still be picking up views long after a TikTok has faded.

Scheduling them is easy. Here's how.

How to schedule a YouTube Short in YouTube Studio

  1. Go to YouTube Studio and click Create, then Upload videos.
  2. Select your vertical video. It must be vertical (or square) and up to three minutes long to count as a Short.
  3. Add a title and description. More on this below.
  4. Choose audience settings (made for kids or not) and any other details.
  5. On the Visibility step, choose Schedule and pick the date, time and time zone.
  6. Click Schedule.

Scheduled Shorts appear in your content list with a scheduled date, where you can change the time or edit details before they go live.

Shorts-specific settings worth knowing

  • Length: up to three minutes since October 2024. Shorter often performs better, but you no longer need to trim longer TikToks.
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical, 1080×1920.
  • Music: if you use copyrighted music in longer Shorts, check YouTube's current rules on Content ID claims before posting.
  • Thumbnails: Shorts thumbnails are more limited than regular videos; make the opening frame strong.

This is the biggest difference from TikTok. People search YouTube with intent. Titles like "how to fix a squeaky door hinge in 30 seconds" can rank in YouTube and Google search for a long time.

  • Put the keyword first.
  • Describe what the viewer gets.
  • Keep it short enough to read on mobile.

Cross-posting from TikTok

Upload a clean master file without the TikTok watermark and rewrite the caption as a searchable title. Our step-by-step guide: cross-posting TikToks to Reels and Shorts.

Scheduling Shorts alongside other platforms

YouTube Studio only schedules YouTube. If you post the same video to TikTok and Instagram too, a multi-platform scheduler saves time: Buffer, Metricool, Later and Sharevia (ours) all publish to YouTube along with other networks. Can you schedule Shorts from your phone?

The YouTube app lets you set visibility when uploading, and scheduling options have expanded over time, but the most reliable way to schedule, edit and manage Shorts is YouTube Studio on desktop. If you mostly create on your phone, a common workflow is to export the video, upload it from a computer in YouTube Studio, and schedule it there, or use a third-party scheduler that supports YouTube.

Titles and descriptions that help discovery

A good Shorts title:

  • Starts with the searchable phrase. "How to fold a fitted sheet in 30 seconds."
  • Promises a specific result.
  • Stays short enough to read on a phone.

A good description adds a line of context and, if relevant, links to a related long-form video or your site. Hashtags are optional; YouTube identifies Shorts by format.

Connecting Shorts to long-form

One of YouTube's advantages over TikTok and Reels is that Shorts can lead to long videos on the same channel. If you make long-form content:

  • Use Shorts as trailers or highlights.
  • Link a related video from the Short where YouTube allows.
  • Mention the long version at the end.

Even if you don't make long videos, a channel with a clear theme helps viewers subscribe after a Short they liked.

A weekly Shorts routine

  1. Take the week's best vertical videos from TikTok or Reels.
  2. Re-export clean files without watermarks.
  3. Write searchable titles.
  4. Schedule one a day in YouTube Studio for the next week.
  5. Check analytics after a month: which titles and topics keep getting views?

Shorts reward patience. Views often build slowly and keep coming.

A simple Shorts habit

Every video you make for TikTok or Reels can be a Short too. Upload it with a better title, schedule it for the next day, and let YouTube's longer shelf life do the rest. It's the cheapest extra reach in short-form video.
